The Building of the Souter Superkart

Story & Pictures Courtesy of Donnie Souter
Building this super kart is something I had been wanting to do for about 3 years. At the time I was racing 250 ICE with the Southwest Road Race Association (SWRA) in an old Swift with a 257 Rotax. It was an old kart, and I did manage to win a couple of races with it, but I did not like the way it was engineered. It seemed like the designers went out of there was to make it difficult to work on.
You see, I work on cars for a living. I am certified as a master automotive tech. I run my own business with out any employees. I have about 375 clients, and I specialize in Toyota & Lexus. I have been a mechanic for over 35 years. I have also worked as a race car chassis builder in some chassis shops, I have also worked in race engine shops a a machinist. I am also a certified master machinist. I started racing at age 8 in go- karts. I will be sixty in a few months, so I have been at this for a while in all different kinds of race cars.
Once I made my decision to build my own Superkart, the first thing I did was order the engine. Then I ordered all the components brakes, spindles wheels, steering etc. After that I made a material list for all the tubing and ordered a tube bender. (I choose a bender by Pro-Tools.) Next I had to build the table to build the kart on. I did not build this kart with pre-planned drawings or any thing. I knew basically what I wanted so I drew the basis chassis design on the table with a black marker.
I do not have a mill or lathe in my garage. When I needed to do machine work, which was about once per week during the entire project, I drove to Wells racing in Duncanville TX. about 30 miles from my house and used their machines. A big thanks goes to Dennis & Sharon Wells for letting me do that! I could never have built the kart with out the use of there machines.
I plan to have my own mill & lathe one day, but I need to move to a different house where I have room to build a shop big enough to run my automotive business and have room to work on my racer and have all the necessary equipment I need to build & maintain my own kart in my own shop. This is my goal for the next few years is to get all that in place. I would estamate I spent about 100 hours at Wells racing to do all the machiening. |

Once I was satisfied with the design, I started bending tubing and fitting it. Each and every part was engineered as I went. My goal was to make it very easy to work on and make sure it would handle well. I had learned a lot with my old swift, I modified the chassis in many area and it responded very positively so I knew I had done the right thing, and I incorporated those things into my new chassis.
I don't care where you go, racing is a tough game and there are very talented people in any form of racing you choose. Winning is not an easy thing! The guys that are winning right now certainly have my respect, and I would like to be a winner as well. Through my racing career, I have earned 28 1st place wins over the years in different kinds of race cars. There are no 2nd place trophies in my house, so that might give you an idea of what winning means to me.
I chose your group to race in after seeing a USSK Superkart race at Motor Sports Ranch a few years ago. I saw what a great group of racers this was, working on there own cars having a lot of fun, and I immediately knew that is the kind of group I wanted to be associated with. I am glad I am here! |

Unfortunately so far this season, I have been struggling with my engine package, but I could not begin to try to count the number of people who have sincerely tried to help me with getting it to go. I thank each and every one of you and you know who you are.
When it was all said and done, this project took about 1,500 man hours and I did it in 9 months. With my business, I needed to work from 8-6 and some times later, so in order to get this kart done I got up at 3AM every morning for 9 months,7 days a week. On Saturday's and Sunday's I worked 15 hour days.
Yes, I could have bought a good competitive kart much cheaper, and I could have slept, which believe it or not I really enjoy doing, but I endured because I love to build beautiful race cars and I love to driving them even more!
